Foster Homes Needed

Love having a dog around but can't make a long term committment? Not sure about handling vet bills but have plenty for dog food and toys? Consider being an SDSR Foster Home!

By fostering you can help save SDSR at least $175.00 a month in possible boarding fees - and help save a life! Without the room (or the money to board) SDSR runs the risk of having to say no to a shelter that might otherwise put a loving, hopeful, adoptable dog "to sleep" forever.

Some common questions and answers:

Can I decide when and for how long I have a dog?
Certainly! When we hear of a dog in need, we'll put out the call to our Foster Homes to see who is available to help out. We try to match our foster dogs to their temporary homes just like we match the adoptable dogs to their forever homes.

What if I Foster a dog and it doesn't work out (doesn't like my current animal, I am not ready to help housebreak, my schedule/circumstances change, etc)?
Please just give us a call and let us know. We may ask for a day or two (depending upon the urgency of your request) to find a better placement for our Foster Dog, but we will help you out and we can wait for a dog better suited to your circumstances to come thru our doors.

What happens if I fall in love with a Foster Dog and don't want to let it go?
This happens to all of us now and then! You will have first choice of any foster dog in your care. If you are a quality Foster Home (and you will be if you are one of ours!) then you will be a wonderful Forever Home.

Do I have to pay anything to foster?
All we ask is that you provide food, love and the occassional grooming service to your Foster Dog. You will have the name of the SDSR vet if an emergency arises - in that instance, we might ask that you handle the immediate payment, and be reimbursed by SDSR for your expences. All other vet bills will be handled by SDSR and those vet visits need to be approved prior to being scheduled.

Fostering isn't for everyone - your life may be too busy for an animal, your current animal may not want another dog sharing his/her home, it may prove too hard to let go of your Foster. We can tell you - letting go is bittersweet but watching the happiness and love between your Foster and his new family more than makes up for it!

To apply to be a Foster Home, please fill out our online adoption application - in the spot where it asks for the name of the dog you are interested in, please enter "Foster Home".
